Downtown is located between Gulf of Gdansk and
scarp, which stretches between the town’s south and north borders.
The area covers about 2 square kilometers (about 1.6 square miles)
and in its highest point reaches about 4 meters above the sea level.
The area is about 550 meters wide in the south and gradually narrows
to a few meters in the north where it borders with Gdynia.
The region started to take its present form about
7 thousands years ago after the ice age. It used to be hard to cross
swamps, which divided the early settlement and gulf. Only at the
beginning of XVII century first drainage ditches were constructed to
dry this area. It gave rise to the beginning of a small fishing
settlement.
The shore line consists of sandy beach which
stretches along the entire sea cost and it is about 4.3 km long. A
mole stands in the middle of beach line and extends 450 meters into
the sea. The beach is widest in its middle section, where it reaches
110 meters and narrows to a few meters in the north end. The beach
is surrounded by sand drifts from the land, which are on average 2
meters high. Sand drifts are a place of rare fauna and for that
reason they are under protection. Sand drifts started to form about
5 thousands years ago under the influence of wind and sea waves.
If we take a walk towards land we will soon come
to scarp, it is picturesque precipice covered with various forms of
vegetations reaching 30 meters above the sea level and like the
beach it stretches between the town’s borders for about 4.3 km. The
scarp is particularly good representative example of a natural old
coastal line, a remnant of the Littorina Sea at the Baltic coast,
which was reaching to the scarp about 7 thousands years ago.
The area above the scarp is covered by sandy
hills, which were created during the ice age, next to the Gdansk
upland line and the bottom of erosional valleys cutting into the
upland. The area is reaching between 11 and 62 meters above the sea
level.
Part of Tri-City Park belongs to municipality of
Sopot, which is also called Gdansk Upland or Gdansk Heights and it
is divided by gorgeous erosional valleys. The area is covered by
rich vegetation and variety of trees. It covers about 9 square
kilometers and elevates up to 152 meters above the sea level. It is
place of 8 big valleys with gorgeous names which you cannot
translate into English like most names.
From the Gdansk Upland many brooks take its way
to the gulf, most of them have been buried under the ground as
canals. They are responsible for creation of 17 ponds. The names of
the biggest brooks are; Swelina, Kamienny Potok, Potok Grodowy,
Potok Babidolski, Potok Kuźniczy, Potok Wiejski, Potok Środkowy,
Potok Haffnera, Potok Karlikowski
Sopot is divided into 8 districts:
- Brodwino
- Gręzowo
- Karlikowo
- Kamienny
- Osiedle
- Przylesie
- Stawowie
- Świemirowo
