Sopot is an important center for tennis in Poland . The Sopot Tennis Club is considered by many professionals to be the best facility of its kind in the country. Tennis courts with more than a 100-year history attract tennis enthusiasts from across Europe . It is here where an annually tournament known as the Orange Prokom Open takes place. It is considered the best organized tournament in Europe and draws the sport's greatest stars. In upper Sopot there is also Forest Stadium - a training facility for current and future Polish Olympic stars. Forest stadium is a great place for athletic events being a modern recreation center. The Sopot hippodrome is one of the three objects of this type in Poland . The Hippodrome has an excellent track and a picturesque location which places it above similar facilities. At Sopot hippodrome there are organized prestigious international contests in jumping and racing. The hippodrome also has a grassy square, a show place for many different types of athletes. The exceptionally high level of basketball represented by the local team is a pride to Sopot fans. Water Sports
Sopot Sailing Club is one of the most modern and largest windsurfing centers in Europe . Located at Sopot Beach , near the famous pier, it brings together the most recognized players in the world and at the same time provides an excellent base for recreation. Sopot is also a center of catamaraning. Sopot School of Catamaraning "Navigo ", is staffed by experienced instructors offer courses and training to acquire new skills in this field of sport. Sopot Match Racing Center is the first professional base in Poland for yachting. It has a fleet of six 11-meter yachts, all of which take part in the European Championship Match: the Toyota Sopot Match Race. Winter Sports
Sopot's greatest winter attraction is an almost 300 meter long ski lift, located on one of the hills surrounding Sopot from the west. This is a favourite destination for skiers in Sopot, and is the only place in Poland where, when skiing, you can admire the sea. For guests there are two possible routes, one for skiing and another for bobsledding. There is a separate area for a ski school and instructor. If you do not have your own gear there is place to rent skiing equipment. Not forgotten here is the ever growing group of snowboarders. Nearby is an attractive forest for cross-country skiing. And of course at the base of the hill is a nice tavern where, unlike most other establishments, its season is in winter as opposed to summer. For fans of ice skating in the winter there is artificial ice rink (also only open in winter) located at the base of the pier. |
