Poland, Sopot's Monuments. Monument of return of Sopot to Poland.

Monument was built in 1980. It is made of two large granite pieces and it is 2.5 meters high. On the bottom granite there is brass board with arms of Sopot and on the top piece there is date “March 23, 1945”. It is located at the crossing of Elizy Orzeszkowa and Adam Mickiewicz Street.

March 23, 1945 is the date when last units of German army were expelled by rapidly approaching units of Red Army from north (Gdynia) which were part of larger formation the Belarus Front. All Wermacht units were push towards Gdansk after fierce but short fighting. Some of the buildings around the main downtown square at the crossing of Bohaterow Monte Sassino and Powstancow Warszawy Street were burnt. The Casino and Health House was destroyed the rest of the town sustained only very little damage. To this day it is not certain if it was result of the fighting or it was set on fire later by Russians.
