There are many disco clubs in Sopot, some of them with a few decades of history and some new disco clubs like newly open in 2001 discotheque Viva Club on the beach. Although the clubs advertises itself as the most popular disco club in Tri City agglomeration to which belongs also Gdansk and Gdynia with almost 2 million citizens all together it is just another new place to visit with nothing extraordinary.
Disco clubs in Europe
One of the oldest clubs is Club Lajba (lajba in English means old boat with rather poor condition), which started as a student club and theater in 1960. Later after many renovation and changes it became the most popular student disco club, it is located close to the university building in upper Sopot. A few disco clubs did not survive time and competition. There were times in 1970s and 1980s that it was hard to get inside and if you were late you had to bribe the guard to get in. But 1990s brought new political and economical changes and most of the places were almost empty until the end of millennium when people rediscovered disco clubs again.

Most of the disco clubs are located at downtown near the pier and beach. One of the oldest disco clubs is Fantom, located where the Heroes of Monte Cassino Street ends and the pier begins. Not far away is Non Stop, a little less popular place but also busy during season. On the pier there is disco club Tarasy on the fresh air and open only during summer. |
If you take walk north you will find four more disco clubs. Casino Orbis situated in Grand Hotel, almost next to it Viva Club and not far away in the park; Sfinks and Galaxy. Sfinks is also place of Art and Culture, it was built in 1909 as a pavilion of art and after the IIWW it was a school of Art and Sculpture. Galaxy is located in old North Baths from 1970, which are currently partially demolished and awaiting a new reconstruction but the disco club is fully function and renovated in that part of the building. Most of the clubs are open very early particularly during summer when there are many guest who want to play and eat and they will stay open till morning if there are enough people who want to pay. So you will have a lot of excitement particularly in clubs located next to beach when you see the sun rise over the gulf when you leave for hotel. Nevertheless if one closes early there will be always another club not far way where you can play longer.
