Sopot Sailing Club was founded in 1983 by former members of the Windsurfing Section from Gdansk , which is part of the bigger club, Neptune. The club is located near the beach between the pier and the administrative border with Gdansk . The club has over 100 members with about 40 members who train all season and take part in various competitions. The club's leadership is selected usually every two years and is responsible for running finances, promotion, administration and various events. From the beginning windsurfing has been the only sport, as a result it has been possible to achieve a high level of sophistication and win many competitions. Of course, during the summer the windsurfing school is open to tourist spending their time in Sopot.
It is considered to be one of leading sailing clubs in Poland in windsurfing, and is a window to the world. Members of the club are involved in typical sailing in Mistral class (so called classic on long board) which is an Olympic sport. The club is situated next to the beach, on which premises a future sailing marina is planned. Next to it there are campgrounds with a good tourist base. The club is involved in training teenagers all year round and during peak season a school is open for amateurs. All those interested in learning can take lessons from former Olympic champions.
Typical competitions organized by the club are The Major of Sopot Cup, the Baltic Cup in July, which is designed as an international regatta for sailors of Baltic Sea . In 1997 the club hosted the World Junior competitions in Mistral Class. The club also organizes competitions for amateurs in windsurfing. Water sports for years have been the main attraction for countless tourists coming here every year. As far back as the 1890's, there has been a sailing club known as "Code Wind" - the Danziger-Zoppoter Yacht-Club, whose tradition is still kept the by present sailing club.
Of course it is a place open for everybody who wants to learn or just rent equipment, and trainers are always available on standby.
